Cat Food – Is Your Cat Eating The Right Things?

Cats are generally pretty self-sufficient creatures – as long as you feed them and give them fuss from time to time, they’re fine. But what should you be feeding them to keep them strong and healthy? Well, firstly it’s important that you give them good quality food as often cheap food contains harmful toxins that can make them ill. This was highlighted during a recent scandal when cheap Chinese cat food was found to be full of chemicals that were harmful to cats.

You should also aim to feed your cat wet food wherever you can as it generally has more nutritious value than dry food. Of course, much of what you feed your cat will depend on what the cat likes as some are much fussier than others, but most of them love chicken, lamb and beef so these are always good options. You can also feed them other meat when it is in season, from animals such as rabbit to poultry such as pheasant.

Lions, tigers, panthers and all the other cats that exist in the wild often eat lots of raw meat on a regular basis. Raw meat can be a great way to keep your cat strong and healthy as it offers a really good source of protein. Domesticated cats sometimes have more problems with digestion though, so it’s important that you make sure the meat is cut into small chunks wherever possible and that it’s in season. Also check to make sure all the meat you give them is good quality.

Don’t panic if you don’t have the budget to feed your cat on good quality raw meat all time. As a general rule, most meat is fine as long as you don’t buy the cheap varieties of commercial brands. The best of the commercial cat food brands have spent millions of dollars research the different nutrients that cats need and they’ve come up with tasty, nutritionally balanced alternatives that most cats really love. This can be a great way of getting top quality cat food on a budget.

Finally, you should always make sure your cat has access to plenty of fresh water as this will help to keep their fur coats healthy and shiny, as well as helping their digestion process when they eat. This is especially important if you feed your cat any dry food as they will need more help in digesting in properly. It’s also important to make sure their bowls are kept clean and hygienic as this will prevent the spread of infection and keep them in great shape.
